Halloween Candy Cookies! Yum!

So what do you do with all that leftover Halloween candy? Here’s an idea I stumbled upon – Candy Cookies. Wouldn’t it be nice to make these tasty treats for your office? Hint Hint! Here’s a recipe from Relish.com. There are so many options out there, just search around.

Candy Cookies
Chop leftover Halloween candies and tuck the pieces into cookie dough in lieu of chocolate chips. Almost any candy will work—Butterfingers, Heath Bars, Milky Ways, Snickers, Kit Kats, M&Ms and even Twizzlers, gum drops, and jelly beans.
Ingredients

·                            3 2/3  cups all-purpose flour

·                            1 1/2  teaspoons baking powder

·                            1 1/4  teaspoons baking soda

·                            3/4  teaspoon coarse salt

·                            cup (2 sticks) butter

·                            1 1/4  cups firmly packed brown sugar

·                            cup granulated sugar

·                            eggs

·                            teaspoons vanilla extract

·                            2 to 3  cups chopped candy bits (such as Butterfingers, Baby    Ruths, Heath Bars, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Twizzlers, jelly beans, M&Ms, Lifesavers)

Instructions
1.       Preheat oven to 350F.
2.       Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt into a bowl. Set aside.
3.       Beat butter and sugars together with a mixer until very light, about 5 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add vanilla. Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture and mix just until combined, 5 to 10 seconds. Stir in candy bits.
4.       Drop dough by tablespoons onto baking sheet. Bake 15 to 20 minutes. Cool on baking sheet 2 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Lamenting the Loss of a Community Landmark

I was saddened to find out that one of WP’s oldest alligators was euthanized, as in killed with empathy, just recently.  His crime?  He grew.  That was his terrible offense.  One of our neighbors, whose children play near the pond the alligator called his home for many years, felt his size was threatening.  One choice would have been to require her child to play elsewhere.  Her choice was to call the PAI who then put the “problem” in front of the Board.  In SC, alligators cannot be relocated.  Nuisance alligators may be killed (softly called “harvesting”) so as to not be a nuisance. Let’s be sure we understand “nuisance alligator”.  The current legal definition of a nuisance alligator is one that “is depredating (killing livestock or pets) or a threat to human health or safety”. This gator needed a good defense attorney.  He had not ventured beyond his domain, he had not approached any person or pet.  Was he a surprise alligator?  No, he lived here probably longer than any of us.  We knew of him and his cousins who swim and hunt in our ponds and bask on the sunny banks for warmth.   Signs tell us not to bother them or feed them.  So far, they’ve left us alone because we left them alone.  What a concept.   When we, as homeowners, purchased here, did anyone attempt to disavow the existence of these reptiles closely related to dinosaurs?  No, we are proud of them.  They are an important part of our natural history.
Do you know that ecologically, alligators are important predators and create important habitat for other wildlife by digging holes that hold water during droughts.  Did you know that being “ecotherms”, alligators do not need to eat much…a 100-lb dog will eat more in a year than an 800-lb alligator.  Further, alligators have a natural fear of humans; it is extremely rare for alligators to chase people.
What is needed is a better-educated populace here in WP.  Please do not feed the gators or the turtles who co-exist in the same ponds.  Please do not allow small children to play by themselves in or around the ponds.  Please closely supervise children who are playing around the ponds.  Please inform others that feeding alligators creates problems for your neighbors who want to use the water for recreational purposes, like fishing.  SC law (Section 50-11-750) is clear.  It is unlawful to feed or entice with food any alligator.  Any personal violating the provisions of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, must be fined … or imprisoned…
Let’s think hard before we react….or overreact.  Let’s act responsibly.  Let’s not kill another gator who is minding his own business.

Great Fall Weekend!

What a great fall weekend! The weather was perfect during the days and just cool enough for a campfire and smores at night. I love this time of year in the Lowcountry.  Hope you all visited the Bluffton Seafood and Arts Festival. This one always draws a huge crowd and offers tons of great food and amazing local art.

If you’ve never visited Holiday Farms (just outside of Ridgeland, SC), you’re missing out. This pumpkin patch is open from October 1-October 31 every year. There are so many activities for the kids including the “Haytona SpeedwayDuck Races, Bounce House, Corn Grinding, Steer Roping, Cow Milking, and MORE!  There’s a Barnyard Zoo where you’ll meet several friends and is home to the pig races. Then head over to the covered wagon where the hayride will take you to the pumpkin patch. This is a must if you have children. They will love it!

Then it was off to the South Carolina Yacht Club on Sunday. From feathers and finery to eerie eyes and terrifying teeth, the children were inspired to create their pumpkin masterpiece. Here are some of our creations.

16 old boy builds home for a mortgage-free future.

What an amazing boy! This boy is building his own home and plans to move in it. It's a must read and watch.

Austin Hay is still in high school, but he's building his own house. It's only 130 square feet, but it makes him a homeowner without a mortgage at just 16 years old. Right now, it's parked in his parents' backyard, but he's built it on wheels so he plans to take it to college and then wherever he goes after he graduates.
He's been sleeping in his tiny home for a few months now and he's already decided not to return to big (his parents' home is 1800 square feet). "Living small means less bills, living big means more bills," he explained from the tiny stoop of his new home. "I don't want to pay big bills".

Hay's 130-square-foot home may make him the youngest member of the growing Small House Movement.

Hay expects to spend about $12,000 building his home (the used trailer cost him $2000) and he's paying for it working two summer jobs (at a camp and at a park snack bar). He's cut his costs in half (the home's estimated DIY price is $23,000) though this is a considerable discount from the home's estimated price of $23,000 because Hay has scavenged everything from doors, windows and flooring to the kitchen sink (the hardwood floors were $25 at a salvage yard and so was the stainless steel sink).

Hurricane Preparedness

Although we don’t need it for Irene, this may come in handy should we have a storm threat any time in the future. While browsing a few blogs, I came across this one about preparing your “Go Bag”.  I thought it was a good list of items to have on hand in case of an emergency. Let’s hope we never need it.

Get Yourself a ‘Go Bag’.

by Natasha on August 26, 2011
On Tuesday we had a 5.9 earthquake.
This weekend a category 2 hurricane is expected.
Oh yeah, & I live in Washington D.C. These things are not supposed to happen here! Much less in the SAME WEEK!!
I took this as a nice little warning to get my butt in gear & finally put together that ‘go bag’ P & I have been talking about doing for ages.
What you ask is a ‘go bag’? Well dearest, for an entire family it’s actually more likely to be a ‘go bin’ & it’s a container that has everything you need in a ‘oh sh@t!’ situation, all packed & ready to go. You grab it, throw it in the back of your car & hit the road. It’s also a good contained place that you know all of your ‘in case of emergency’ supplies will be while you’re still at home.
Here’s mine…
  • First Aid Supplies: Red Cross First Aid Kit, thermometer, infant, children & adult Tylenol, hydrocortisone cream, antibiotic cream, aspirin, children & adult Benedryl, prescription meds (an epi pen for Sam & imitrex for my migraines) CHECK MEDS FOR EXPIRATION DATES, they lose their strength when they expire!
  • Food for 3 days: you’re supposed to get non-perishable, low sodium, cooked items. I found that I could save room with vacuum sealed bagged items like rice, tuna & beans & also opted for the individual plastic tubs of cooked pastas since they’re lighter than doing just all cans. Although I did end up with a bunch of canned veggies & soups. Pouch baby food is also easier to pack than jars.
  • Can opener
  • Weather Radio (ours takes batteries & also has a crank for after they die)
  • Utility Knife Multitool- several lists I read recomended a pocket knife in addition to a screwdriver, pliers & a wrench. (for turning off gas) With this tool it’s all in one
  • Large Knife- I bought a large, pointed tip, chef knife that came in it’s own plastic case at Target for $13. Let’s just say I didn’t buy it for chopping tomatoes
  • Blanket- my red cross kit also had the small foil emergency blankets in it
  • ponchos
  • flashlights/batteries
  • water-proof matches (camping section at Target, or you could put regular ones in a ziploc baggie)
  • write out all your emergency phone numbers & put the list in a ziploc baggie
  • coloring books/crayons/stickers
  • glo sticks (I bought the ones with string necklaces on them so I could hang one on each kid if need be)
  • cash in small increments in a baggie
  • spare clothes for each family member
  • local map
  • permanent marker/paper/duct tape
  • copy of important paperwork like id’s, insurance info, house deed, birth certificates all in a baggie
  • spare house key
  • tupperware container for leftover food
  • string
  • Make sure if your first aid kit doesn’t have CPR instructions in it you print some out
  • toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, contact solution, lady supplies, TP)
  • Pets- pet food, water for pet, leashes, make sure ID tags are on collars & if you can put an additional ph number for an out of town relative that has a different area code on the ID. Chances are phone service in your area might be out.
Another thing I did today is I bought a few landline phones. After the earthquake on Tuesday cell service was out for a good 30 minutes which was pretty scary. We only have one landline phone that I was able to call out on & it’s a cordless so after that battery died I would’ve been out of luck. I’m plugging in one corded phone on each level of the house.
So with all that I say bring it Hurricane Irene. Ok, not really, I’m just showing off. Please don’t take my power away. Pleeeeassse!
By the way, in case you missed my classy earthquake story on twitter…
I was on the pot.
Yep. I had just sat down & had Sophie with me (of course, because peeing alone would be silly) when I heard this weird rumble. I actually thought it was a large military plane flying overhead but it just kept growing, & then the glass shower walls started to shake. That’s when instinct kicked in. I grabbed Soph & ran to Sam’s room, scooped her out of bed (she was napping) & crouched in Sam’s doorway with both girls until it was over. All of this sans pants. Lovely. When it seemed to be over I quickly threw on some nearby pajama pants and may or may not have decided to postpone wiping until I was sure we were out of immediate danger. These are the instincts that keep mankind going people. Survival of the fittest, not cleanest. You don’t need to know any more details of what exactly happened, just know that I’m quite sanitary most of the time, just not necessarily during life or death moments. Oh, & be sure to throw some TP in your go bag.

Featured Listing In Windmill Harbour

Here's a great find! This is an end unit townhome in the waterfront community of Windmill Harbour on Hilton Head Island. This low maintenance, Lock and Go townhome would make for a great second home or a primary residence. And the master suite is oh so spacious. Can't beat the walk-in closets and the upper veranda. And I have to mention the detail...............amazing wood floors, dental molding, great fireplace. All of this in the quaint area called "Leeward Passage" within Windmill Harbour.  Let's go see it! Appropriately listed at $629,000!

What a great way to spend our Independence Day

I had the opportunity to spend this past July 4th at a home that we currently have listed with our real estate brokerage. I must say that it is an absolutely beautiful home! What a great entertaining space. There were kids playing corn hole along the side of the house, boys running with poppers, couples chatting in warmly lit rooms, and friends dining and enjoying the views from the many decks. Every room of the home was filled with smiling faces and friends having fun. This is what we all dream our parties to be like. What a great way to spend the 4th. When it was time for the fireworks, we transcended to the third level deck where we could see 180 degrees of fireworks from all over Hilton Head. Then it was time for the Shelter Cover fireworks. We were front and center for those. Amazing!!! As I was spending time in the beautiful home, I was reminded of why we move to Hilton Head and why we are so drawn to the marshes and creeks of the Lowcountry. There are not many communities on Hilton Head like this one. I find Crosswinds to be a quaint waterfront community with lamp lit tabby streets, custom built homes and a sense of amity throughout. For more information on this home, call Lonnie Goulet @ 843-338-0094.

More Shelter Cove fireworks.

And some of us partied too much.
Hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July!

I love my drive to work!

I love my drive to work. Some people are not as lucky. I guess this is why I choose to live by the water. It’s something different every morning coming over the bridge to Hilton Head. This morning the sky was that yummy grey blue and slightly cloudy with rays of sunshine coming through in a few places. If I could paint, it would be this sky. In the distance you can see kayakers and a sailboat here and there. I love it here. What a great way to start off the day!

Summer Solstice Today

Summer Solstice

For those of us not in either Polar Region, the Summer Solstice is the day of longest daylight and, conversely, the shortest night. Our sun is at its highest position. This event has been a cause  for celebration since man could celebrate. My favorite interpretation is that of the Druids who glorify the event as an idealized wedding of Heaven and Earth, which then lead to the belief that June is a lucky bride’s month. Likely, I will not be the only person on the beach raising a plastic glass of bubbly in the  time-honored tradition. May we all have a pleasant Midsummer’s Night Dream………

Hello Summer Camps!

Summer camps are so important to keep our children happy and challenged. I’m also finding that they help keep parents sane over these few summer months. So in my search for the perfect summer programs for my 6 year old, I have come across several camp options. One of which is going on now. For the next few weeks, our son is attending the Tennis and Sailing camps offered by the South Carolina Yacht Club. They offer superb tennis instruction and a sailing program unlike anywhere else on Hilton Head. And as any enthusiastic mother would do, I ran down to take some pictures. The summer is off to a good start. This camp is offered to members as well as non-members of the SCYC. If you’re interested, here’s the information. Why Home Sales Will Rise This Year

Following closely on the heels of Morningstar's report that "initial signs of a reversal are upon us", we have the chief economist for the National Association of Realtors listing several reason "why home sales will rise this year", e.g.,
. More Jobs
. Rising Stock Market
. Rising Rents
. US and Foreign Investment in Homes
The short sale approval process has improved and banks are making profits which increases their desire to lend. Gas prices have decreased which serves to inspire much needed consumer confidence. Affordability, low interest rates and an improving job picture, along with improved consumer confidence, has driven homes sales upward. We agree, this is indeed very good news.

MEMORIAL DAY - FLAG DISPLAY

The impressive Windmill Harbour Real Estate office proudly displays its two new flags just in time for Memorial Day honoring the brave men and women who have died defending our nation. "Freedom Isn't Free" and our flag has become a symbol of the hardwork and sacrifice of those who we have lost in the field of battle. The state flag displays the same design that flew over independent SC during the Civil War. The Palmetto tree was instrumental in the defense of Sullivan's Island against an attack by British warships in 1776. Cannonballs fired at the fort merely sank into the soft, tough Palmetto wood. The color blue was inspired by the soldier's uniforms in the Revolutionary War while the silver cresent was on their caps. Seen raising a toast are (from left to right) Marguerite Carver, Frank Curley, Lonnie Goulet, Paige Rose, Will Settle, and Joe Lucchesi.

Hilton Head Island Real Estate ~ Internet Shopping

INTERNET SHOPPING-- It seems to be common place today to do most of our shopping on the Internet. No need to go to the stores anymore--you can get most of what you need just sitting at your desk during lunch surfing the web. Studies show that 87-90 % of Real Estate Buyers start their search online. This can be a real time saver --or so we think. It is easy to spend hours pouring over homes that "look" like the perfect home-only to find out that the "homey" kitchen was the size of a closet or that you have a major highway running thru your back yard( where was that in the pictures) It is very important to establish a good relationship with an actual agent--one that can do most of the leg work for you. When you give them your 'Wish List" they can rule out alot of properties that will not work --many of which looked perfect on the Internet saving you valuable time to enjoy the things that you like to do. Remember the internet is a good tool but should not be used in place of finding a good strong REALTOR who will ultimately save you time and money.

Hilton Head ~ Home Prices Are On The Up!

"HOUSE PRICES ARE CURRENTLY GOING UP" !!!... This according to analysis done by Morningstar, Inc., and independent investment research company founded in 1984. On May 23, 2011 they detailed...... "long story short, the news flow regarding residential prices is set to take a turn for the better in the coming months" and "the data is showing solid gains: 2011 is likely already ahead of 2009's seasonal bounce" whose results benefited generously from government stimulus. Back in February of this year, The Wall Street Journal advised us that "housing prices will probably bottom in 2011" and that investors with cash are buying up houses and condos; investors are betting on a rebound. Locally, The Island Packet, earlier this hear headlined "Across Beaufort County Vacation Homes Sales Are on the Rise." Sellers, take heart; the future seems bright. Buyers, get out there and invest in your future!!!

Short Sale Vs Foreclosure

In today’s market, we see many of the homes on the market as “short sales” or “foreclosures”. What does this really mean for you, the buyer? Both usually give you a home that will end up being purchased at less than the current market value but the process is very different. Just ask someone who just spent months waiting on an answer on a short sale only to find it going into a foreclosure auction. Here are a few pros and cons of both the short sale and foreclosure.

Foreclosure:
This is usually a bank owned property. The bank will usually make current the back taxes and utilities. In some cases, these properties have been left in a hurry and sometimes left in a mess and with furnishings removed such as appliances, fixtures, bathroom mirrors, and anything else the owner thought was of value.
Once you are ready to submit your offer, your realtor will help you determine a reasonable price to offer. This is usually close to the asking price and in some cases, if a bidding war starts, it will sell for more than asking price. There is not much negotiation here.  The bank will even continue to accept offers during this time. In some cases, you may have to be prequalified by the selling bank in order to even submit the offer. Once the offer has been accepted, this sale usually closes within 30-60 days. You may choose to perform an inspection and a CL100 but the banks typically will not make and repairs or concessions, the property is sold as is.

So your positives are that the process will be quicker than a short sale and you will end up purchasing a home below current market value.

Short Sale:
A short sale home is still belongs to the homeowner. The homeowner has communicated with their bank that they will be selling their home “short” or less than what they currently owe on the property. The homeowner is usually still living in the home and the home is in good condition.
Once you are ready to submit the offer, your realtor will help you determine the price to offer. In this case, there is more negotiating power. The seller will sign off on the offer and submit it to the bank. Even though the seller signed off and “accepted” the offer, the bank will have the final say. They may come back with a counter offer. This process is usually longer than a foreclosure, lasting anywhere from 30-90 days. I’ve even seen it longer than that. Once the offer has been accepted, the closing takes place 30-45 days later. You may choose to perform an inspection and a CL100 and in some instances, the seller may choose to make the repairs but usually the home is sold “as is”.

The positives to a short sale are that you typically have more room to negotiate, are receiving a home in fine condition, and are purchasing a home below market value.

Not Your Typical Sunday!

This past weekend was fun filled and educational in our office. Not only did we have the Open House on Sunday, but we also had an amazing Trish McEvoy Make-Up Event. Two National Trish Make-Up Artists were here to provide some one-on-one time and education featuring those summer must haves for that sun-kissed look. The nearest Trish McEvoy counter is in Charleston so we were very lucky to have the girls in our office. It was a much needed visit. Can't wait for them to come back. If you would like to be notified of the next event, please e-mail us. We would love to see you.
