South Carolina boasts quite a growing season, thus eating
locally grown food is not only easy, but delightful.
Spring is the season now for Asparagus, Beets, Beans,
Broccoli, Cabbage, Cilantro, Green Onions, Leafy Greens, Peas, Radishes, Squash
and Strawberries.
Where do you get the freshest local produce that the
Lowcountry has to offer? On Tuesdays on Hilton Head Island through December,
from 10am to 2pm, mosey down to The Farmer’s Market at Sea Pines Center. Not
only will you be able to return with a plethora of tasty fruits and vegetables,
but you can get local nuts, honey, baked good, and gifts.
If Tuesday doesn’t work for your schedule, do not fret. Simply cross the bridge to Bluffton and enjoy
meandering the streets of Old Town Bluffton checking out the stalls at the
Bluffton Farmer’s Market on Thursdays from 2pm to 7pm. Offering fresh produce,
local honey, nuts, gifts, pasta, jams, etc. You may even leave well fed as
there is a variety of prepared food available as well.
Spring and summer also provides bounty from the
sea. This time of year you may enjoy catching speckled sea trout, flounder,
cobia, and small shrimp. What sounds better than fresh fish paired with fresh
veggies, all gathered sustainably here in the Lowcountry?
