Sea Devils on Hilton Head Island

I've lived on Hilton Head all my life and have never seen a Sea Devil. One of our Windmill Habour Real Estate agents, Marguerite Carver, frequents Mitchelville beach. It's one I've never really thought about visiting. My beach time is spent relaxing in a chair by the waterline. I think I'll take the boys down to Mitchelville to do a little beach combing. Maybe we'll find this illusive sea creature's egg casing.

 

I grew up in NJ and spent every summer on Long Beach Island, specifically Beach Haven.  We fished, crabbed, clammed and collected shells.  My mother explained the names of creatures; one was of particular intrigue…..the Sea Devil.  I was left with the impression that this was a roguishly suspicious character and wondered at its prowling of the sea.  There were a lot of them on the beach in those days….that being the 1950’s.  I hadn’t seen any in recent years nor given them much thought until recently when I spotted one on Mitchelville Beach.  Just one lone Sea Devil.  With renewed interest I was surprised to discover that my “devil” was no mysterious creature at all but rather a very unique egg case.  Being of great appeal to many predators, skates protect each of their eggs in individual rectangular cases detailed with horns on each corner.   These tough black casings are made of keratin.  Pairs of “horns” adorn the ends and offer assistance in anchoring the vessel to the ocean bottom while at the same time providing for oxygen intake and waste release.  Clever multitasking!  Additional monikers include “mermaid’s purse”,” sailor’s purse” and “devil’s purse”.   Mom’s name for it might have been misleading but I like it best.

HCG Diet - Personal Testimony

This Blog is written by one of our Windmill Harbour Real Estate agents. It's her experience with the HCG diet. As I have done this diet and lost 20 pounds, I have to agree with everything she's saying here. At first glance, the diet seems restrictive and grueling. I'm always up for a challenge and know that your best results come from those things that are difficult to achieve. I knew I could do it and see the losses that so many others have seen. And I did, I've lost a total of 20 pounds. Yippee!!! Now I'm off to buy new clothes. :)

My Experience with the HCG Diet.

Weight Gain-Hot Flashes-Bloating.  That is what I have been experiencing for the last 3 years.  I can handle all of these except the weight gain.   I have never had a problem with my weight.  My family has always been on the smaller side.   But in the last year- I had gained 16 pounds!  It's amazing how it crept up on me.  When I went in for my yearly checkup my doctor suggested I try the HCG diet.  I am not one for "fads" but thought since this was recommended by a doctor maybe it would work.   I went to an informational meeting and decided to give it a try. The majority of the people on this diet do not gain it back which also interested me.   I started January 7 and to date (February 7) have lost 17 pounds!  I have been thrilled with the results.  I eat 2 meals a day and feel full of energy and sleep great.  There is a very strict diet you have to follow-- but once you get the hang of it is fairly easy.  It's amazing how much I would eat during the day just nibbling.   I have had no ill effects from the plan and will probably meet my goal loss of 20 lbs.   I am in Phase 2 closing in on Phase 3.  I have been doing this with a friend in the office, which makes it almost fun (although she has lost more than I have) I am now a believer of this program even though I am generally a huge skeptic when it comes to anything that is unusual.

Furniture and fabrics can be difficult and expensive to clean. There is a perfect choice out there: SUNBRELLA! No, not your typical outdoor fabric that you purchase at the discount fabric store, but fabulous twills, tweeds, and boucles in beautiful patterns and textures. These are only available through a decorator (and we all know at least one). My living room sofas are covered in a fabulous pale blue nubby sunbrella that I can clean with soap and water! My den club chairs are in a deep green/brown with red piping - all Sunbrella fabrics and cleanable with a scrub brush, soap and water. Pets and children are no match for this durable product. So check with your favorite decorator on the newest fabrics available and update your furniture with designer look fabrics that your friends will envy and never guess it can be used outdoors!

Short Sales

It seems like everywhere you turn today people are talking about short sales.  Who is doing one, a short sale they looked at to buy, short sales never work, short sales take forever --- you name it it is being talked about.  While we have seen a huge increase in short sales over the past few years, they are hardly a new process.  Banks have been doing them for years.   A short sale simply means that if you sell your home, the purchase price is less than the loan amount to pay it off.  Because the Bank will not be paid in full, they will need to "approve" the sale.  If you have an experienced agent, the process will be much smoother and quicker.  It is also imperative that the seller have all of their financial information in order and pass it along to their agent quickly.  We have been seeing some short sales get done in as little as 3 months!!  For sellers that use the property as a primary home--we also have avenues available to request funds from the government to help with relocating expenses.    If you need to sell and want to find out the the real facts behind short sales, give us a call-- we'd love to help.
