Hurricanes and Hilton Head Island

One of the most common questions we get here at Windmill Harbour Real Estate Company is how our Island is affected by hurricanes. Here are some facts about hurricanes and Hilton Head Island.

The last biggest scare we had was in September of 1889 when Hurricane Hugo. Although Hugo left a wake of devestation and damage from the Leeward Islands to New England, we on Hilton Head had no damage.

Our island is tucked inside a a curve that runs along the East Coast, this helps to protect us from hurricanes. The storms tend to get caught up in the Gulf Stream and taken North.

Becuase of our geographical location, we've been lucky. However, a hurricane could just happen to us, are you prepared? It is always a good idea to have a family exacutation plan just in case.
  • Traffic will be stop and go, and gas station lines outrageous, so have a backup tank of gas. Filling up the one you use for the lawnmower should keep you well away from E as you travel.
  • Pack water and nonperishable foods. Grocery stores, gas stations, and other stops along the evacuation route will be crowded and possibly picked apart.
  • Have battery powered flashlight and radio, as the power could go out.
  • Pack your perscriptions, bug spray, toilet paper, wet wipes, etc. Think of its as having a suped up diaper bag.
  • Bring some blankets and pillows.
  • Finally, bring something to keep you and your family entertained. If the IPad dies, then a deck of cards could prove a life saver.
If you have any questions about local weather, evacuation routes, or life here on Hilton Head Island, do not hesitate to ask! Call the Richardson Group at Windmill Harbour Real Estate Company (843)681-5600.

Fourth of July Fireworks and Fun on Hilton Head Island

fireworks.jpg

One of the busiest weeks on Hilton Head Island is here, the week of the Fourth of July. Saturday we as a nation and those of us on Hilton Head will celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence from July 4, 1776.

If you are fortunate enough to be celebrating Independence Day on Hilton Head Island, watching fireworks is most likely the foremost activity on your mind. The most popular place to view fireworks is Shelter Cove Marina, located mid-island. The fireworks start at 9:00pm. There are plenty of restaurants from which you may choose to dine prior to the display. Due to the huge influx of people Shelter Cove receives for this event, there will be two parking lots available with complementary shuttles. If you are within walking or biking distance of this location or the following, that would my preferred mode of transportation.

On the South End of Hilton Head, Harbour Town in Sea Pines is also hosting a Fourth of July Celebration. Sea Pines is providing a shuttle for ease of parking as well. Fireworks will be at 9:00pm after live music, activities, and plenty of food and drink at one of Sea Pines Resort’s restaurants.

Fret not if you are on the North End of Hilton Head. Skull Creek Boathouse will also host a firework display with live music beginning at 6:00pm.

Please keep in mind that all locations will be very busy. Whether you are a guest on our Island or resident, be careful and mindful of the people around you. We are all here to have a great time and celebrate a proud day in our nation’s history.

As always, if the thought of leaving this beautiful island is too much to bear, please call us at Windmill Harbour Real Estate Company, (843) 681-5600. We are happy to help make this your home too!

Fishing, Fathers, and the Lowcountry

photo 1.JPG

Summer is a wonderful time for outdoorsmen here in the Lowcountry and on Hilton Head Island. A favorite activity is fishing. Surrounded by ocean, creeks, and rivers, there are so many options for the avid angler or a casual fishing trip.

This time of year, Windmill Harbour Real Estate Company's Joe Lucchesi and his son Nick love to take their boat out into the tidal creeks in search of Redfish. They hop out of the boat and wade the mud flats during high tide keeping their eyes peeled for fins. Once they spot some action, Joe and Nick pull out their fly rods.

In addition to Redfish, this time of year our waters yield trout, tarpon, red fish, spanish mackerel, cobia, sharks and more. If you are looking for a great gift for Father’s Day, consider taking Dad on a fishing trip. What could be a better gift than spending time on the water making memories?
For any questions about fishing and living in the Lowcountry or on Hilton Head, please do not hesitate to contact us at Windmill Harbour Real Estate Office (843) 681-5600.
